HIPAA Compliance

HIPAA compliance is coming soon. We’re finalizing agreements with our infrastructure partners before making it available to customers.

What is HIPAA?

HIPAA (Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act) is a US law that protects sensitive patient health information. If your business handles patient data — like a medical office, dental practice, or healthcare provider — you need HIPAA-compliant tools.

Current Status

Akol has built the technical features needed for HIPAA compliance:

FeatureStatus
Data encryptionReady
Extended data retention (6 years)Ready
Automatic redaction of sensitive info in transcriptsReady
Audit logging for all data accessReady
Business Associate Agreements (BAAs)In progress

We expect HIPAA compliance to be available in Q3-Q4 2026.

What HIPAA Mode Will Include

When HIPAA compliance is available, healthcare businesses will get:

  • Automatic redaction — Sensitive information (like Social Security numbers) is automatically removed from transcripts
  • Extended data retention — 6-year retention as required by HIPAA
  • Full audit trail — Every time someone accesses call data, it’s logged
  • Encrypted storage — All recordings and transcripts are encrypted

Healthcare Use Cases

Even without HIPAA mode, Akol is great for healthcare businesses for non-sensitive tasks:

Appointment Scheduling

Patient: “I need to schedule a follow-up with Dr. Smith.” Agent: “I can help with that. What date works best for you?”

General Inquiries

Patient: “What are your office hours?” Agent: “We’re open Monday through Friday, 8 AM to 5 PM.”

After-Hours Messages

Patient: “I need to speak with someone about my upcoming procedure.” Agent: “I’ll take a message and have someone call you back first thing in the morning.”

Best Practices for Healthcare

If you’re a healthcare business using Akol:

  1. Don’t put patient data in your agent instructions — Keep your system prompt general
  2. Use call transfers for sensitive topics — Train your agent to transfer medical questions to staff
  3. Include a recording notice — Add “This call may be recorded” to your greeting
  4. Keep it simple — Use Akol for scheduling and general questions, not medical advice
